(A
listening lesson

Section1: Teaching aims of this period

Students will practice taking notes for getting main ideas;

Students will use a chart to listen for details;

Students will practice designing questions;
       • Students will practice answering questions in role-play;

Students will develop a new idea of being a millionaire.

Section2: Difficult points

Taking notes while listening;

Learning to design questions;

Developing a new idea about money.

Section 3: Teaching Approaches

Task-based teaching and especially one part of it—situational communication—is highlighted.

Section 4: Teaching Procedures

Part1: Getting Ready
Task1: Listen to part of the song “Money, money, money” and fill in the blanks of the lyrics.

   I work all night, I work all day, to pay the
bills I have to pay  Ain't it sad
And still there never seems to be a single penny left for me
That's too bad
In my dreams I have a plan
If I got me a wealthy man
I wouldn't have to work at all, I'd fool around and have a ball...
Money, money, money
Must be funny

          In the rich man's world
Money, money, money
Always sunny
In the rich man's world

Task
2
: Identify the topics of the song

}  What does the song mainly talk about?

}  It is mainly about a woman’s dream of becoming rich some day and not having to work any more.

}  Why does the woman in the song want to become rich that much? (What is a rich man’s world like?)

Objectives of Part 1:  to draw students attention to the theme of the listening material and get them ready for the following listening. Part 2: Listening for main ideas

Task 1: Listen to the first part of the text twice and find the answer to the question:

}  Do all rich people find the happiness that they thought they would get? Why or why not?

Task2: Listen to the related sentences and answer the question:

}  What do they choose to do then?

Objectives of Part 2: In
this part, students will learn how to take notes while listening for the main
ideas. The questions in this part are all designed at reasonable difficulty
levels and they can best lead students to acquire main ideas step by step.

Part 3: Listening for details

Listen to the second part twice and fill in the table about the changes of Charles Gray’s life

Time

Changes

Charles’
  feelings

__________ years
  ago

He had a _________________
  house and _____________dollars.

He was
  _____________ being a person who had everything in the world.

As years went by

He gave all his
  money away to ____________ and the people in _____________.

He was
  ____________ to give up the lifestyle of a rich man. He felt like
  _______________.

It was a lot of
  _________.

today

He lives in a
  small ____________ room where there is only ______________________.

Having a little
  money makes him ________. He is much __________.

Objectives of Part 3: This
table is designed for students to figure out the details in a clear way and it
also provides some useful information for students to refer to in the following
part.

Part4: Learning to ask and answer questions in role-play

Task1: Work in groups and design questions to ask Charles ray

}  Tips:

}  The opinions of his family or friends, his life goal, the value of money…

}  Example

}  Mr. Gray, do your family or friends support you?

Task2: Learn to answer the designed questions

}  If you were Charles Gray, how would you answer the questions?

Objectivesof Part 4: Students in this part are
led to design questions related to the theme of the lesson. In the process of
answering such questions they are sure to get a better understanding of the
value of money. This part gives students a chance to ponder on the values of
money and their life goals.

Part5: A class survey

Task1: Express your new idea of being rich.

}  After learning about Charles’ story, do you have a new idea of money or being rich?

Task 2: Make a choice provided by the teacher

}  A. Having a large sum of money is still my life goal.

}  B. Being rich is only the result from something we can’t predict or decide, and it is still too far away from my life now. So I won’t think about it too much.

}  C. My life is in my own hand. I just want to live in my own way no matter rich or not.

}  D. Compared with earning much money I’d like to
choose the jobs which are meaningful even if they can not bring me much money,
such as being a teacher, a doctor or a soldier.

Objectivesof Part 5: to lead the students to give a summary of their new idea about money or their life planning.

Part 6: A conclusion by the teacher

}  To be (rich) or not to be is NOT a question. What we
should focus on is not how much money we get but whether we have fully realized
our life value or not.

Objectives of Part 6: to draw a conclusion of this lesson and lead the students to think about their life value.
