Unit 7 What’s the highest mountain in the world?

Teaching aims and demands:

2) learn more about Qomolangma

2.Ability objects:Train the students’ reading skills---scanning &skimming

Teaching method:Task-based teaching method, pairwork

The analysis of students:The students have learned English for some years.They understand some words and sentences.They have learned some reading skills.They are curiousactive and fond of various activities.They enjoy challenging themselves by finishing some tasks in a relaxing atmosphere.

Teaching procedures:

Step 1. Warming up and revision

Have a free talk to revise some important geographical facts by asking some questions.

1.What’s the biggest desert in the world? How big is it?

2. What’s the deepest salt lake in the world? How deep is it?

3. What’s the longest river in the world? How long is it?

4. What’s the higtest mountain in the world? How high is it?

Step 2. Lead in

Play a video---Everest, then discuss: What do you think of Qomolangma?

Step 3. Pre-reading

1.Task 1:Read the first sentence,then answer the questions:

1).What’s one of the world’s most dangerous sports?

2).What’s one of the most popular places for mountain climbing?

2.Test the students’ preview of the new words: achievement, southwestern,thick,include,freezing,condition,succeed,challenge,achieve,force,nature,take in,in the face of,even though/if 

Step 3 While—reading

1.     Task 2:Skimming: Reading strategy: Read the first sentence of each paragraph and find out the key words quickly then match with the main ideas.

Paragraph 3            facts and dangers

2.Task 3:Read Paragraph 1 carefully,then answer the questions and find out the dangers .

1)Where are the Himalayas?

2)How high is Qomolangma?

3.Task 4: Read Paragraph 2 carefully, then fill the chart.

1). Why do so many people try to climb this mountain even though it is dangerous?

2). What does the spirit of the climbers tell us?

5.Task 6: read the article loud after the tape then read together.

Step 4. After--reading

1.Task 7: Fill the blanks without books according to the passage.

Step 6. Homework

Surf the Internet and look for a story about a climber who has reached the top of  Qomolangma, then tell the story in the next class.
