Unit 1 What subjects do you study?


Part 1.  Teaching material & Ss.

This lesson is from section A ,  Unit 6 in the second semester of Grade 5,  Xianglu English.  There is a conversation about subjects.  This lesson lays a foundation for the further study. Students in Grade 5 love acting and speaking out, but they still have difficulty in learning words &sentences.


Part 2. Teaching aims. 

Knowledge aims:

1. By the end of the class, Students can master the usage of new words:subject, Science, Art.

2. Students can grasp the useful expression by using them in the dialogue:

What subjects do you study?

We study English, Chinese and Science.

Do you have Art ?

Yes, we do. We have Art on Wednesdays.


Ability aims:

Through role-playing and cooperation, Students can improve their listening, reading, speaking and communicative skills.

Emotional aims:

Students can build confidence and develop interest in learning English.


Part 3. The teaching key point & difficult point

The key point is how to master usage of the new words and sentences about  subjects.

The difficult point is how to communicate with others naturally in a real situation.


Part 4.Teaching methods & learning methods

I'd like to use TPR , TBLT, Communicative Approach and Cooperative Learning . 



Part 5.Teaching procedure

Step 1 Warming up & Lead-in

After greeting,  ask students to sing a song Baby Shark with me. The purpose is to attract students attention and create a relaxing atmosphere.

Then ask question "  How many lessons do you have today ? " to lead in the title " What subjects do you study ?"


Step 2 presentation 

Use pictures to present the new words like " subject, Science ".

Ask questions "  What subjects do you study?"  to get the answer "We study English, Science and Art."

Ask questions "  Do you have Art ? " to get the answer "Yes, we do. We have Art on Wednesdays."

Ask students to read after me. Boys read, girls read.  Group by group. Read together.

Then sing a song of the days of the week to present the days of the week.


Step 3  Practice 

Ask students to practice in different ways like " Bomb game ""voice game" & " Big tree ".

Eg. subject ( loud voice & low voice 演示)

The purpose of playing games is to stimulate students motivation in learning English.

Ask students to use another word to replace the underlined word to practice sentence. 


Step 4  Production

Divide students into two groups  Sunflower A, Sunflower B to role play the conversation , and invite students to perform on the stage.  If they do a good job, I’ll give petals to make their sunflower  more beautiful. It's a good way to develop cooperation and communicative skills.


Step 5 Consolidation

As a consolidation,  we’ll sing a chant.

We study English, Science and Art.

Do you have English ?

Yes, we do. We have English on Mondays.

Do you have Science ?

Yes, we do. We have Science on Tuesdays . 

Do you have Art ?

Yes, we do. We have Art on Wednesdays . 


Step 6 Summary 

Ask students to sum up the key words and sentences we learned today.


Step 7 Homework

Ask students to Preview Part 1 and tell their friends about subjects they learn at school.
