Lesson 4 Let’s Dance
Teaching Objectives:
By the end of the class, student should be able to:
1. To know various dances.
2. To use some useful reading strategies.
3. To describe an event with a mind map.
Teaching Background:
After learning English for a long time, students have achieved a remarkable level of English. And from this semester on, teachers are trying to bring in learning strategies such as mind maps to classes, hoping they can help students analyze the structure of texts and promote language output.
Teaching Important and Difficult Points:
1. To figure out some reading strategies.
2. To Introduce a dance by drawing a mind map.
Teaching Procedures:
Step 1. Greetings and Lead-in.
Play a video about different dances and let students classify them into 3 types: Ballet, Folk Dance, Popular Dance. And then by skimming learning objectives, students are expected to realize them by the end of the class.
Step 2. Reading Comprehension.
Ask students to read the text quickly and finish 4 exercises related to the text. This part aims to train students to deal with reading questions with proper strategies.
Step 3. Reading for Information.
①Lead students to find out the missing sentences of the text.
②Get students to underline the key words of the given statements, which may help them fill in blanks with correct statements.
③Encourage students to work out some strategies while checking answers.
(key words, time references, and pronoun references.)
Step 4. Reading for Details.
①Ask students to read the first paragraph, and lead them to analyze the structure and content with a mind map.
②Encourage students to work in pairs and draw up another mind map about folk dance or popular dance.
③Invite some students to show their mind maps and try to retell another two kinds of dances.
Step 5. Discussion.
Show a video of an American called Tom, who is interested in China’s popular square dancing. Students are required to discuss in groups and give Tom a brief introduction about square dancing in aspects like its origin, features, costumes, performers, etc.
Step 6. Enlightenment.
Students are encouraged to think of advantages that dances bring to their lives and to pursue dreams bravely.
Step 7. Summary and Self-assessment.
Sum up what has been learned today with students and ask students whether they have realized the learning objectives.
Step 8. Homework.
①Do Exe.(5 in 7) in workbook.
②Write a short passage to introduce a favorite dance.
