Unit 3 Grammar and Usage

 

Teaching Objectives:

1. Enable the students to understand the situations of using unreal conditionals of the present and past. the unreal conditionals of future will be left to the second period of time as it also involves the phenomenon of inversion of sentence structure. Hence it might be too complicated to teach the students all about them in only one class.

2. Make students understand and master different structures of unreal conditionals.

3. Encourage students to make use of unreal conditionals to make up stories or sentences to experience this new grammar phenomenon.

教学难点

Teaching Important and Difficult Points:

Learn when and how to use unreal conditionals correctly.

学情分析

1. Students might find it hard to understand the words connected with grammar.

2. If the teacher focuses on explaining what the patterns for unreal conditionals mean students might find them even harder to understand.

教学方法:

Teaching Approaches:

1. Offering enough language input including listening materials in which an expert is trying to explain “second conditionals” making students experience unreal conditionals used in the real situations.

2. Helping students find out different structures of unreal conditionals of the present and past. Make students conclude them.

3. Set interesting situations to make students practice – realizing the “output” of language.Teaching Aids: The multimedia the computer and the blackboard

Teaching Procedures:

Step I Lead-in

Ask the students : What’s the date today Dec. 23th What festival will it be in a couple of days in the western countries Christmas Day Do you wish to get my gifts today

Show on the screen:

Christmas is coming

1. If I could afford I would send you each 1000 yuan as a Christmas gift.

Ask students : Can I afford How do you know Is it possible for me to give you this much money for a gift

2. If my grandpa were alive I would hug him and kiss him on the cheeks as a Christmas gift.

Ask students : Is my grandpa still alive How do you know

Tell students: The situations are not real or are imaginary. We call them unreal conditionals. Unreal conditionals state a condition or situation that is not real or is imaginary.

Step II Learning

1. We use unreal conditionals to state a present condition or situation that is not real or is imaginary.

Show the former two sentences as well as the sentences from the text to the students on the screen to make students find out the structure of unreal conditionals of the present.

1. If I could afford I would send you each 1000 yuan as a Christmas gift.

2. If my grandpa were alive I would hug him and kiss him on the cheeks as a Christmas gift.

3. If I got married in UK I would expect a present.

4. I could reach the book if I were a bit taller.

5. If I had the chance I might want to be a translator.

Ask students to tell the Pattern we use in unreal conditionals to state a present condition or situation.

If… was/were/did … …would/could/might do …

Practice: 1.假如我有更多的时间,我就学习德语了。If I I had more time would study German.

2.要不是她这么忙,她就会出席今天下午的会议了。If she were/was not so busy she would attend the meeting this afternoon.

TIP: 1.Would could and might are often interchangeable but with some difference in meaning.

Would → intention plan

Could → ability possibility

Might → probability

2.In written English or in formal situation we usually use were in If-clauses in place of was. However in everyday conversation was is often used.

If students are in a lower level oflistening ability type the material out and hand out to students before listeningpractice.At the end of the program the host asks two questions as follows make it a taskfor students to answer pay attention students have to answer them in completesentences:

Task one : If you could live anywhere in the world where would you liveTask Two : Form groups of four and make up more sentences with we have learned till now. Writing task: 圣诞节要到了,要是我有很多钱的话,我要买个房子给妈妈做礼物。或者,要是我能飞的话,我从美国给她买最新款的皮鞋!不过,也许妈妈并不需要这些,如果妈妈知道我现在很努力,每天都有进步,她也会很高兴的吧! In this writing practice students have to identify which sentence needs an unrealconditionals which doesn’t . The teacher needs to give necessary explanations pattern    

If … had been/done… …would/could/might have done… Practice: 1 如果他抓紧时间,他本来能赶上那趟火车。If he had hurried he could have caught the train. 2 如果你昨天告诉他,他也许会提些建议。If you had told him yesterday he might have made some suggestions.More pratice:Task one: Choose the best answer:1 -- My boss often made me work day and night. -- If I _____ you I ______ the job. Students form groups and practice freely . Atthis time teacher could hold a small competition between groups for answering thisto raise both of students’ interest and their answering level.Step V. Discussion Show students four pictures: a magic lantern a magic brush a magic stick and atime machine. Ask students to discuss in groups: What would you do if you had a… Step VI. Homework Finish Parts C1 and C2 on Page 118 in Workbook.
