My passage is about group work, and effective way to learn English.

As is known to all, group work is an important part in English learning.

To begin with, group work is one method that helps children to overcome their cowardness and shyness. The prospect of standing in front of everyone and saying something in a foreign language is a really terrifying experience for some children and it is no wonder that they say “ I’m sorry, I don’t know.” However, in a group situation, as they communicate with their friends, they can join in without so fear of making mistakes. Everyone is equal. Everyone makes mistakes as a starter.

Second , working in groups helps students unveil their own abilities. Group work gives opportunities for students to work together, to discover and develop their ability, to communicate with each other. We have to admit that group work gives students ample opportunies to seek and share information. Just as someone said, “ None of us is as smart as all of us.”

Howerer, not everyone of our teachers can use group work appropriately. To be frank, I myself was once a failer. That was happened during the first year of my teaching career.

During the process of teaching comic strips, I diveded my students into several groups, telling them that they could talk with each other and then act the four pictures out. At first, they seem to talk about it carefully. Then someone began to argue about which character to choose. The argument started like a swept fire, it swept so quickly that soon it began out of control. Soon the class went into chaos.  While I was standing there, trying to stop them with shouting,” don’t be so noisy.”  I tried but tried in vain.

Just to give up using the group work? It’s a shame that I really did so for a short time. Luckily, an experienced teacher knew it and encouraged me to use it again. She said. “ it is not because of group work’s weakness, but you didn’t use it effectively.” That is to say, I should make some rules and my students must obey these rules, for nothing can be accompanished without norms or standards.  I did so , and tried several times after that. Things began much better. And surely it works.

 To sum up, group work means not only to empower sutdents in their learning but cooperation, shared –decision making and group achievement.

As an American proverb goes, “ there is strength in numbers. “ I think that’s why many of us teachers, and students like group work so much.
