Unit 1 Nothing is more enjoyable than playing tennis.
Teaching model: Listening and speaking
Teaching aims:
1. To understand conversations about sports, process information of comparison concerning sports
2. To talk about the sports one likes using comparative forms
Teaching key points:
1. Key vocabulary: baseball, volleyball, boring, exciting, relaxing, already, matter, plenty of
2. Key sentences:Watching is not dangerous and it’s more enjoyable than playing tennis.
But you enjoyed watching the Olympic on TV, right?
And staying at home was easier than going to the stadium.
Teaching difficulties: the use of comparative degree of adjective with two or more than two syllables.
Teaching Steps
Step 1 Greeting
Step 2 Lead-in
1. Ask and answer between Ss(students) and T(teacher). “What do you usually do in your free time? ” “Do you often do sports in you free time?” Lead Ss to answer.
2. Show a picture about table tennis, ask:What is he doing?(He is playing table tennis.) I like playing table tennis, I think it’s enjoyable. It’s more enjoyable than many other sports.
Step 3 Presentation and speaking
1. Show some pictures about football, volleyball, table tennis, baseball and tennis.
T: I like table tennis very much, because it’s very exciting and relaxing. But I don’t like baseball, I think it’s difficult and not safe. What about you? Lead Ss to talk about the sports, use the words in 2.
2. Write down the adjectives on the blackboard.
3. T: Most of you like playing basketball, but I like playing table tennis. I think playing table tennis is more exciting than playing basketball. Ask Ss to make more sentences like the example.
4. Check Ss’ answers and explain the use of comparative degree of adjective(more)

Step 4 listening and reading
1. Go to 3. Ask students to listen to the record, ask some questions.
What are they watching?
What’s the matter with Tony?
2. Check the answers.
3. Ask the students to read the conversation silently and finish the exercises. Check the answers.
4. Play the recording and ask the students to listen and read the conversation.
5. Read the conversation in roles.
Step 5 Exercises
1. Ask the students to finish Activity 4. Check the answers.
2. Finish Activity 5. Ask some Ss to report it in class.
