 Unit 7   Lesson 1 the Spirit of Exporers

Teaching Objectives:

1)To get the main idea of the passage ;

2)To know how the three Vikings reached Greenland ,an unknown land plus Newfoundland and consolidate students’ understanding by the traces of their voyages.

Teaching Procedures:

Step 1: Leading in

Play the song “ we belong to the sea “ to motivate students’ interest in the unit’s topic and introduce the title “the Spirit of Explorers;

Show pictures of some explorers to lead in the main character “ the Vikings”

Step2  Read the first paragraph to tell “who were the Vikings ?”

Step3  Read in silence the first two paragraphs to define “ the Vikings ”

The Vikings ,also known as pirates in Northern Europe , were the first Europeans to reach America . They achieved this long before Columbus set sail .

The Vikings were a group of Scandinavian people who sailed in ships to control the seas and the coasts of Northern and Western Europe from the 8th to 11th century.

Step4  To show the region of Scandinavia in the map to help students understand .

Step5  To present the four places onto the world map.

     Iceland , Scandinavia, Newfoundland, and Greenland

Step6  To listen to choose the best answers.

1)Why did Eric the Red leave Iceland ?

A  Because he was tired of Iceland   B Because he had committed a murder and got into trouble

C  Because he wanted to go Greenland DNo one knows for sure.

2) How is the passage written ?____

Step7   Read Paragraph 3 to 5 to locate the traces of the Vikings .

    Present on the screen and write down the key phrases and words on the blackboard .

       Eric the Red   left  Iceland to Greenland , returned and set sail again

       Biarni  hope to join  in search of   on unknown land , reach Greenland

       Leif and Biarni  followed his directions  on a planned trip Greenland to Newfoundland

Step8   Read the passage carefully to fulfill the following tasks .

Task 1 to match each part with the main idea.

Task 2 to fill in the gaps according to the text .
