Thinking about the end of the world isn't something I enjoy, but to keep it real, things are not looking good- eventually, this planet will not be habitable anymore. Seeing the way my state's government is colluding with the fossil-fuel industry to build new fossil-fuel plants, cutting down our forest, and destroying the habitats of some of the area's most magical species sickens me. That's why I, along with 12 other young people, am suing Washington. We believe the government isn't doing its part to ensure we have clean air and water. The government is destroying the beautiful Pacific Northwest that is my home.

Caring about environmental issues has always been a part of my reality. I'm the nerdy kid who grew up watching nature and science shows, aware that climate change is threatening everything I love and care about. I recycle, compost, and share info with my friends about the harm humans have been doing to the planet. But in the past few years, I've realized we're not just killing the Earth- we're killing ourselves by killing the conditions we need in order to survive.

Last summer, I attended a civics program at Princeton University, where I met students from islands in the Pacific and heard how their land has been sinking underwater from climate change. When I got home to Seattle, the Pacific Northwest was blanketed in smog from smoke and ash from wildfires. Suddenly, I couldn't go outside or to my favorite park. The thick air made my head throb, and it hurt to breathe. I knew I needed to do something that would have a big impact, and I started by getting more involved in an environmental group in my area. I'm not doing this so I have something to put on a college application- I'm doing this because we are seriously running out of time.

Suing the government is overwhelming because we're just a group of kids against a literal state. So yeah, it's a lot. But I've seen the power teens can have, even before March for Our Lives. I also organized a youth climate march on July 21 in Washington, D.C., called Zero Hour. Our objective: lobbying representatives to demand they stop taking money from fossilfuel companies. The government may have money and power on its side, but we have the truth on ours, and that's why I believe we'll win.
