Book 5 Unit 2 Using Language Reading part

I. Teaching goal

I.I Knowledge goal

Key words: available, delight, remain

Sentence patterns: There + vi. + subject

                         It is strange/ necessary/ natural/ important/ a pity that clause (should)+ v. 虚拟语气

I.II Ability goal

Enable the students to describe a tour around certain places they had been to on vacation.

I.III Emotional goal

Help students to appreciate the historical sites in London.

II. Students analysis

The students are in Grade two. Actually they are interested in fascinating scenes in UK, especially those in London.

III. Teaching important and difficult point

III.III Instruct students to know more about the background of those historical scenes.

IV. Teaching procedures

Step I. Lead-in

Before class, three students worked in group to make a presentation. They worked together to set a topic. Then one student collected resources. The second made the PPT. The third one gave us a presentation in class. Their topic is The Country in Western  Europe.

 

Step II. Warming up

Step one: Briefly introduce the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, St Paul's Cathedral, the Meridian Line and Windsor Castle.

Give students several minutes to talk with partners. Then ask them to give an answer. Then share the truth with them.

1. The Tower of London. It looks white, yes? Do you know the reason why it looks white? It is because it was made from white stone.

2. St Paul's Cathedral. Look at the round roof. We can call it a dome. If you whisper a message inside that wall, it will be heard across the other side of the dome.

3. Westminster Abbey. Many important people were buried here. Have you ever heard of Charles Dickens? He was a famous writer who wrote the novel named Oliver Twist, in Chinese it was "雾都孤儿”. He was buried here. Isaac Newton, a scientist, as well as many politicians, was buried here.

4. Greenwich. Does the Meridian line truly exist? Absolutely not. It was imaginary. Do you know the reason why people create it?

Students: It was for navigation.

Teacher: Yes, you're right. In the Middle Ages, many explorers travelled around the world. Some of them even discovered the American Continents. But at the same time, a lot of travelers went off the coastline and got lost at sea. Hence, they created the longitude line.

5. Windsor Castle

Here live the queen and her family. Do you think travelers can pay a visit there? why? In fact, it has some impressive state apartments that are open for the public to view. The queen and her family's private apartments are not open to the public as it is privacy.

 

Step III. Fast reading

Learning methods: Scanning and task-based Language Teaching

Scanning

Make a list of Zhang Pingyu’s tour of London.

On the 1st day:                   Comments?

1.      Tower of London             delight, fancy

2.      St Paul’s Cathedral           splendid

3.      Westminster Abbey          interesting

4.      Big Ben                    Famous and loud

5.      Buckingham Palace

On the 2nd day                  Comments?

On the 3rd day                  Comments?

1.        Karl Marx’s Statue      Strange

2.      British Museum        thrilled

How about the last day?

Students said that Zhang Pingyu went to visit Windsor  Castle.

 

Step IV. Detailed reading/ language points

Teaching approach: Ask students to find the word in Using Language and guess the meaning from the context. Make sure the function of the word in the sentence.

Part one words and expressions

1. available  adj.

    1) (sth.) that can be used 可用的; 可得的

        Eg. This was the only available room.

        Tickets are  available at the box office.

    2) (sb.) be free to seen 可会见的,有空的

         Eg. I am available  in the afternoon.

         He was not available for the interview.

Arrange students to work in pairs and make a dialogue. Then show it up in class.

Eg. AWill you be available this Saturday afternoon?

B: Sorry, I’m afraid I’ll be very busy. I’m worried about my homework.

A: Never mind. I’ll meet you next time.

2. delight  n.&v.      愉快,乐趣,快乐

Fill in the blanks with  in /to/ at.

1) I took delight __ books.

2)  __ his delight, he passed the driving test.

3) We are delighted __ the news that we will have a seven-day-long vacation .

3. remain

1)      When everybody else was in a panic, she remained calm.

2)      We will remain at school for another five days. 

3)      It remains to be seen whether you will succeed in the future.

4)      He bought a gift for his daughter with the          money.

5)      The pilot asked all the passengers on board to remain _____ as the plane was making a landing.

Part two Sentence Patterns

1. There followed St Paul’s Cathedral…

接着参观的是圣保罗大教堂……

时间副词,地点副词+ Vi. +主语

Ex. 1) 还有16个学生在教室里学习。

       There remained 16 students studying in the  classroom.

      2) 中国银行附近发生了一场抢劫。

      There happened a robbery near the Bank of China.

      3) 公交车来了。

      There comes the bus.

2. It is strange (necessary/ natural/ important/ a pity) + that (should) + v. 虚拟语气(that引导主语从句)

Should 表惊讶,气愤,惋惜等

Ex. 1You can’t imagine that a well-behaved gentleman                        so rude to a lady.

2)他竟然说了那样的话,真是奇怪。

It was strange that he should have said that.

 

V. Homework

Writing task

    Write a composition about your journey on a vacation. Maybe these words and sentence patterns above are useful for you.
