A lesson plan for Women of achievement

Part 1 Reading

Cognitive objectives

Be familiar with the deeds concerning the women of achievement;

Use learnt words and phrases to describe a person orally;

Write a passage about someone by showing from what she/he looks like, what the person did and so on.

Affective objectives

Respect famous women;

Realize the important qualities a person should have to be successful;

Love wildlife, nature and science.

Teaching methods

Task-based language teaching, inspiration, questioning and discussion.

Procedure

1.     Pre-task (approx. 10mins)

Teacher explores the topic with the class, meanwhile highlights difficult as well as useful words and phrases. It’s best to write them up on the board in a list form so that Ss (students) can take notes.

Teacher makes an example of how to describe a celebrated person.

Teacher divides Ss into 2 groups.

The task for Group A is to look for the reason for that Jane Goodall went to Africa to study chimps.

The task for Group B is to find out what makes her work so important, i.e. what she did out there.

Ss listen to the audio of the text.

2.     Task cycle (approx. 17mins)

a.      Task (approx. 5mins)

The two groups do their respective tasks.

Teacher goes around, monitors and encourages; comments briefly on content when Ss have finished.

b.     Planning (approx. 7mins)

Ss prepare to report to the whole class how they did the task and what they found.

Teacher acts as facilitator, giving feedback to help Ss better their report.

c.      Report/representation (approx. 5mins)

Groups present their findings to the class one by one (orally or in writing).

Teacher gives some advice if necessary.

3.     Language focus (approx. 13mins)

a.      Analysis (approx. 7mins)

Ss examine and discuss specific characteristics of the text. Then they compare notes about what they have learned from it.

b.     Practice (approx. 6mins)

Teacher conducts practice of new words and phrased in the text, either during or after the language analysis.
