Analysis of teaching material
This lesson is taken from Unit 1, senior English for China student’s book 3. This lesson is a reading passage. It mainly talks about various festivals and celebrations around the world
Analysis of the Students
Though they are lacking in vocabulary ,they are interested in this topic. Even if students have different levels, most students are active in the participation in the discussion.
Teaching objectives
• Knowledge Objectives:
• to grasp the important goals and difficult points ;to learn some useful words and expressions
• Ability Objectives:
1. to train Ss’ skill of speaking;
2. To develop the students’ reading skills : skimming, scanning, summarizing, and finding out details.
3. to help Ss develop the ability of learning English through teamwork.
• Emotion Objectives:
1. to encourage Ss to show positive and healthy attitude towards different festivals and customs.
2. Students can have a better understanding of our own national culture and customs.
3.To arouse the students’ traditional Chinese festivals,thus promote students’pride in our nation own national culture and customs.

1.Key points:
1.Students learn some useful new words and expressions in this part, such as ancestor, agricultural, dress up, look forward to and so on.
2. Students learn more about different kinds of festivals.

1. Student fully understand the passage festivals and celebrations.

Guessing : Guess what festival it is according to the picture you see as quickly as you can.(I design this game to arouse students’ interest in the topic, expand their knowledge about different festivals.)
2、warming up :5 minutes
Present some pictures of Chinese festivals and foreign festivals, and then ask
1. Which festival do you like best?
2. How do we Chinese celebrate this festival?
3. Why do you like this festival best?
And then have a short discussion.
(The purpose of this activity is to help students prepare for the reading passage. )
3.Skimming :1minutes
1. What is the main idea of the text?
2. How many types of festivals are mentioned in the passage?
By doing these tasks,students can have a general understanding of the reading passage, they can be aware of the structure of the reading passage.
4.Scanning:3 minutes
Scan the reading passage and then fill in the following chart.

(The purpose of this task is to help students summarize what have they learned in the reading passage. )
Discussion:9minutes
Ask “Foreign Festival VS Chinese Traditional Festival, which will you choose to celebrate?” Should we celebrate western festivals ?Why? There are reference structures as follows.
(This activity will give students emotional education,train students’ speaking ability,team work spirit )
Homework
Design your own festival
If you have a chance to create a festival , what will your festival be like? (name, time, reason, activities)And then write it down as an article.
