Unit 4 Period 4Section B 3a-3c

Reading :  Maybe you should learn to relax!

Teaching objectives

1. Knowledge objectives:  

a.         opinion,skill,tyical,football,quick,continue,crazy,push,development,cause,usual,perhaps,cut out, compare with, in one’s opinion

b.        Sentences:

However, the tired children don’t get home until 7 p.m.

Doctors say too much pressure is not good for a child’s development.

Ability objectives:

a.         Improve the students’ reading skills.

b.        Learn to use new words better after using a learner’s dictionary. 

2. Moral objectives:

a.         Learn to relax and plan things for themselves.

b.        Develop students' cross-cultural awareness.

Teaching key and difficult points:

1.        Language points: not until, fit, include , send, by themselves, it’s time for.../to...,as much as possible, take part in, see sb. doing, compare with, on the one/other hand.

2.  Improve the students’ reading skills.

Teaching procedures

Step 1 Lead in

1.        Ask Ss if they are stressed out right now for the final exam is coming nearer and nearer and we will be Grade 9 the next term. Pressure is a terrible problem (example: Some people committed suicide under the huge pressure).

2.        Lead in the topic: Maybe you should learn to relax!

Step 2 Warming-up

1. T: In our daily life, we are stressed out sometimes. So when under pressure, what do you usually do ?What after-school activities can you think of?

2. Get the Ss to list after-school activities which are available for them.

3. Work on 1a to write down “After-school activities” and share what they have written.

Step 3 Pre-reading

Task 1: New words

1. Get students to look up the words in the dictionary and pay attention to the meanings of each word and choose correct meaning according to the situation.

2. Ask Ss to make sentences with these words and have some students read out their sentences.

Task 2: Discussion

Discuss with partner:

① Do you feel stressed out when your parents ask you to get good grades?

② Do you think many children are under pressure?

③ Are your parents comparing you with other children?

④ Do your parents send you to all kinds of classes?

Step 4 While-reading

1.Fast reading

Task 1: Skimming

Skimming the passage to catch the main idea, notice the words they have just looked up in the dictionary.

Task 2: Scanning

Scanning and answer the following questions:

① When do Taylor’s children get home?

② Do American and British children do many after-school activities?

③ When does competition between families start?

④ What is difficult for these children when they are adults?

⑤ Are the American and British children under pressure?

⑥ What does Dr. Alice Green say about the children under pressure?

2. Careful reading

1)      Mark true or false.

① Cathy Taylor’s children do many after-school activities.

② Doctors say many children aren’t under too much pressure.

③ Parents don’t think their children should do the same as others.

2)      Difficult language points

Read these sentences with the noticed words aloud to the class, and discuss if there is any problem understanding it.

Step 5 Post-reading

Work on 3a. Discuss with your partner. Get some students to report their ideas.

Step 6 Summary

   This class we’ve learned a reading passage. And we knew many families and children are under pressure. In daily life, we should learn how to work and how to relax. If you have any problem, you should solve them as soon as possible.

Step 7 Homework

   You are Dr Alice Green. Write a letter to Cathy Taylor. Give advice about what she should do with her children.(3c, P17)
