Mind Maps of Reading of Unit 2 – Puzzles in Geography

Teaching aims

1. To understand how to draw a mind map

2. To learn how to evaluate partner’s works, including advantages and disadvantages

3. To get a general understanding of puzzles of geography, including history of the United Kingdom, three zones of England and four invaders of England

 

学情分析:学生是处于高中承上启下的一个年级,平时月考班级平均分87分左右,及格率50%左右,良好率10%左右,及格率3%左右,因此,全班同学整体水平居于中等水平,对于学习像Mind Maps这样的新知识存在一定的难度

 

Key points: To get a general understanding of puzzles of geography, including history of the United Kingdom, three zones of England and four invaders of England

 

Difficult points: 1.  To understand how to draw a mind map

2. To learn how to evaluate partner’s works, including advantages and disadvantages

 

Teaching Procedure

Step 1  Greetings

T: Class begins.

Ss: Stand up

T: Good afternoon, everyone.

Ss: Good afternoon, Miss Zhong.

T: Sit down, please.

Ss: Thank you.

 

Step 2  Pre-reading

T:  The weather is more and more cold. About 4 months ago, a big cold incident happened. A country broke away from the European Union. Do you know what it is?

Ss: The Uk.

T: Good. What do you think of it? Is it a good news or a bad news?

Ss: a good news / a bad news

T: Why?

S1: I think it is a good news, because it will lead to the decrease of pound’s value. And I can buy their goods in a lower price.

T: Good points. You are a deep thinker. Any different idea?

S2: I think it’s a bad news, because I think the world’s situation will change. And it will become more complex.

T: Good. I think both of you are reasonable. Well, when it comes to the UK, is there anybody who has been there before?

Ss: No

T: Well,I haven’t been there either. So today, we are going to know more about the UK, but in a more different way. Please turn to page 9, Reading, puzzles in geography.

 

 

Step 3  While- reading

T: First, please listen to the tape carefully and read after it loudly. Clear?

Ss: Yes.

(Ss read after the tape.)

T: How many paragraphs are there?

Ss: Six

TASK ONE  MATCH THE MAIN IDEA WITH EACH PART

Part One                         England is divided into 3 parts

(para.1 –para.3)

 

Part Two                         Four invaders of England

(para.4)

 

Part Three                        How did the Uk come into being

(para.5- para.6)

(Ss do this part together because it is easy for them.)

 

TASK TWO  PART ONE  How did the Uk come into being?

Step 1

Endland + Wales + Scotland =

(Invite one student to come to the blackboard and write their answers on it. If he/ she has any problem, other students can correct it.)

 

TASK Three  PART Two and Three

1. Please use a map to describe 3 zones of England. (para. 4)

2. Please use a map to describe 4 invaders of England and what they left. (para. 5)

(Invite one student to come to the blackboard and write their answers on it and then explain it.)

 

TASK FOUR  HOW TO DRAW A MIND MAP

In this part, the teacher will communicate with students to learn how to draw a mind map and show them the examples of how to draw a mind map from four parts, including definition, uses(brainstorm, note taking, revision, problem-solving), advantages(visual, creative thinking, quick summary) and design(central words, key words, branches, colors, symbols)

 

Step 4  Post- reading   Final Task

Ss use a map to combine three pars together.

 

Step 5  Show Time

The teacher picks two or three works of students and put them into show. Then invite students to evaluate their partner’s works.

Step 6  Homework

Draw a mind map of using language in paper 14.
