Step I: Warm-up (3 minutes) Teacher: We have learned four units so far, now let’s invite some students to come to the front to act out their conversations for us, then you please tell me which unit they act out. Now the first group please. (After four groups finished acting, call several students to give a compliment.) Ok, it’s time for class. Class begins! Step II: Lead-in (5 minutes) Teacher: Now I want you to listen to a song named “Old Macdonald had a farm”, when you finished listening, please try to answer my question: How many animals are there on a farm? (Play the song) Ok, who can tell me how many animals there are on the farm? Students: Two. Teacher: Yes, you are right. What are they? Students: Dogs and cats. Teacher: Yes (write Dog and Cat on the blackboard), do you want to know more about animals? Students: Yes. Teacher: Ok, this class we are going to learn Unit 5 Why do you like pandas? Section A (1a—1c) Step III: Presentation (7 minutes) Teacher: Now I want to ask you where we can see more animals. Students: In a zoo. Teacher: Yes (write Zoo on the blackboard, then show a picture of a zoo to students) Look, this is a picture of a zoo, its name is Bei Fang Forest Zoo. Have you ever been there? Students: No. Teacher: Oh, I’m sorry to hear that. I went there with my family on April 4th. We saw many animals there, such as wolves, foxes, bears and so on, but we don’t like these animals. We like the following animals. Do you want to know them? Students: Yes. Teacher: Ok, now I’ll show you. (Show some pictures of tigers, lions, elephants, giraffes, pandas and koalas to students and write the new words of them on the blackboard, at the same time I say the reason my family like them and write the description words on the blackboard, then I lead students to read the words and then get students to read the new words together, each one read twice) Can you remember all these words’ Chinese and English? Students: Yes. Teacher: Ok, now let’s play a word game. I will divide our class into four groups, then I speak Chinese or English, and you please try to speak English or Chinese as quickly as you can. At last, I give you the time, let’s see which group is the most quickly. Ok, let’s begin. (After playing the game, I tell students the time, encourage the winner.) Teacher: Ok, you did a good job. I think you have grasped all the words. Now let’s do activity 1a on page 25, please open your books. (give students 10 seconds to do 1a and then call six students to give the answer. Then check all the class). Are you all right? Please put up your hands. Students: Yes. Step IV: Listening (3 minutes) Teacher: Very good. Now six students are in the zoo. They are talking about their favorite animals. Let’s listen what they are talking about. Please look at 1b, listen and check the animals you hear in 1a. (Play the tape and then check the answer.) Ok, who can tell me your answer? S1: Koala, panda and giraffe.. Teacher: Do you agree with him? Students: Yes. Step V: Work in pairs (7 minutes) Teacher: Good, you are so great. Just now we knew the students’ favorite animals and why they like the animals, I think you have your own favorite animals and why you like them, now let’s talk about it in pairs with your partner. (First I make an example conversation with one student, then ask students to make a similar conversation with their partners). (Two minutes later…) Teacher: Are you ready? Ok, who’d like to be the first one? Student 1 and Stuent2: What animals do you like? I like pandas. Why do you like pandas? Because they’re cute. ( call several students to make conversations for us). Teacher: Ok, I think you are excellent. Now please look at the blackboard, when you talk about your favourite animals, you should say “ I like pandas.” Not “ I like panda.” We should use plural forms, not singular form. Do you understand? Students: Yes. Step VI: Task: Make a survey (12 minutes) Teacher: May Day is coming and you will have a three-day vacation, you can go to Bei Fang Forest Zoo to see animals with your parents. Now let’s make a survey in groups, talk about what animals you want to see in the zoo and why you want to see them, Four students are a group. I give you five minutes to discuss. Now let’s begin. ( five minutes later) Teacher: Ok, stop here. Now please tell me your survey results. Which group first? Group1: Wang Shiqi wants to see lions because they are smart. Yang Chunhui wants to see pandas because they are cute. Yang Kaibo wants to see tigers because they are coo. I want to see giraffes because they are beautiful. (then call four or five groups to say, at last call two groups to come to the front and say according to the pictures on the blackboard), Teacher: Ok, you did a good job. Step VII: Summary (2 minutes) Teacher: Today we learned some new animal words and some description words, they are very important, you should remember them by your heart. Then we learned some useful expressions about how to express preferences. You should practice them as often as you can after class.
