Mom noticed that something was wrong when I started getting so thirsty. I’d have a lot to drink before bed, which was unusual for me. One time, I opened a big container of apple juice and kept refilling my glass. Before I knew it, I’d drunk the entire container! My mom called my doctor. I then had a few blood tests, and the results were certain — I had diabetes (糖尿病), which meant that the amount of sugar in my blood was very high. That can be dangerous, so I had to learn how to control my blood-sugar level.

My eating habits had to change in a big way. With diabetes, I can’t eat a lot of sugar or carbohydrates (碳水化合物). I have to figure out exactly how much sugar I plan to eat, and then I get an injection of insulin (注射胰岛素) before the meal to help my body process the food. Also, I test my blood-sugar level often. I’m always trying to keep my blood sugar at a healthy level. The level can drop when I exercise, but that doesn’t keep me out of gym class or off the basketball court — I just keep some juice boxes around to boost my blood sugar if I need to.

It’s a lot of work — and not a lot of fun — to keep track of everything, but I’ve gotten used to my new habits. I was a little scared at first because I wasn’t sure how my life would change. Once I knew what I needed to do, though, it wasn’t a big deal. My life is different now from what it was before, but it has become completely regular to me.

1. The first paragraph is mainly about _____.

A. who found the author had diabetes          B. the author’s life before having diabetes

C. how the author was found to have diabetes   D. the author’s eating habits before having

2. What did the author do after knowing she had diabetes?

A. She stopped playing basketball in the gym.

B. She controlled her blood-sugar level strictly.

C. She stopped eating food with natural sugar.

D. She tested her blood-sugar level before every meal.

3. What does the underlined word “boost” in Paragraph 2 mean?

A. Increase.         B. Control.       C. Absorb.         D. Test.

4. What’s the author’s attitude toward her having diabetes now?

A. Worried.      B. Frightened.       C. Pessimistic.             D. Positive.

The English translations of the names of traditional Chinese dishes on menus across the country have caused public discussion about the precision (准确) of the translations.

Since more and more foreigners come toChinaevery day, many restaurants aroundChinaare providing English translations of their menus. They want to make it easier for foreign visitors to order Chinese dishes when they travel. Some restaurants also hope that the translations will increase foreigners’ knowledge of Chinese cuisine (烹饪).

But an article in China Youth Daily says the English menu translations have not lived up to public expectations. It argues most of the English names of Chinese dishes lack the cultural meaning and attraction of the dishes they describe. Instead, the translations only provide a list of each dish’s ingredients, the article notes. For example, one English name of a Chinese dish appears as “Stir-fried mutton slices with Chinese onion or green scallion (葱爆羊肉)”.

Because the English translation focuses only on the ingredients, the author says it fails to describe the dish’s rich cultural meaning and charm. The dish’s beautiful Chinese name, “Fo Tiao Qiang,” has a story behind it. Buddhist monks (和尚) are required to eat vegetables only, but they cannot resist (忍住) the delicious dish. So, they jump over their temple walls to get a taste of the dish.

The article suggests that translators provide more beautiful English translations of the names of Chinese dishes. It also notes a more vivid (生动的) English translation is very important to provide international visitors with a better understanding of Chinese cuisine.

5. Why do many restaurants provide English translations of their menus?

A. Because they want to show their dishes’ ingredients.

B. Because the public expect them to do so.

C. Because Chinese dishes are popular across the world.

D. Because it is a convenience for foreign travelers to order food.

6. According to China Youth Daily, what’s the main problem of the English menu translations?

A. They are too long to remember.                B. Many of them are not correct.

C. They lack cultural meaning and attraction.        D. They are too difficult to understand.

7. What can we infer from the story of “ Fo Tiao Qiang ”dish?

A. Monks can jump high.               B. Monks lived a poor life.

C. OldChinahad little meat for people.    D. The dish attracted many people because it’s delicious.

1970 was the world conservation (自然保护) year. The United Nations wanted everyone to know that the world is in danger. They hoped that governments would go into action (行动) quickly in order to conserve nature. Here is one example of the problems. At one time there were 1,300 different plants, trees and flowers in Holland, but now only 860 remain. The others have been destroyed by modern man and his technology. We are changing the earth, the air and the water, and everything that grows and lives. We can’t live without these plants. If we continue like this, we will destroy ourselves.

What will happen in the future? Perhaps it is more important to ask “What must we do now?” The people who will be living in the world of tomorrow are the young of today. A lot of them know that conservation is necessary. Many are helping to save our world. They plant trees, build bridges across rivers in forests, and soon. In a small town in theUnited   Statesa large group of girls cleaned the banks of 11 kilometres of their river. Young people may hear about conversation through a record called “No one’s going to change our world”. It was made by the Beatles, Cliff Richard and other singers. The money from it will help to conserve wild animals.

C. destroy ourselves           D. destroy the outer space

A. a call given by the Beatles       B. the name of a popular record

C. the name of a popular book      D. the name of a radio station

11.Some of the world famous singers made a record to collect money for

A. the United Nations             B. saving the living things

Is bedtime just a time for dreaming? Do our brains turn off for the night? What if I tell you that researchers recently have discovered that our brains may be just as busy at night as they are during the day? While we sleep, our brains are doing much more than getting ready for the next day. They are busy cleaning out the harmful waste materials.
As with many studies, the researchers turned to mice for help. They studied mice that had colored dye (
有色染体) injected (注射) into their brains. They observed the mice brains as they slept and when they were awake and found that the brains of sleeping mice worked hard to clean out the colored dye.
The brain experts say our brains do two very different jobs. It seems they have daytime jobs and nighttime jobs. When we are awake, the brain cells are working very hard at dealing with all the information about our environment. When we are asleep, they work very hard at removing the waste that builds up when we are awake. The waste material includes poisons that can lead to brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease.
They also found that the brain cells become smaller during sleep. This permits waste to be removed more effectively. The waste will end up in the liver(
肝脏). Therethey are broken down and then removed from the body. The study suggests that we need to sleep because we have a cleaning system that removes the waste from the brain.

The research shows sleep is important to health and fighting disease. The brain’s cleaning system could only be studied with new imaging technologies. The test animal must be alive for this brain process that can be seen only when it happens.

12.What will our brains do at night?

A. They begin to work very slowly.     B. They have a dream for the whole night.

C. They continue to work busily.       D. They are tired and just have good a good rest.

13.How did the researchers carry out the research?

A. By watching the colored dye which was put into mice brains.

B. By making mice eat the harmful waste.

C. By helping the brains of sleeping mice work well.

D. By studying the human brains.

14.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. A lot of waste can form when we sleep.

B. The dead mice can be used for the experiment.

C. Sleep is necessary for people to keep healthy.

D. People need sleep to deal with the information they received.

15.What is the best tittle of the passage?

A. The importance of sleeping

B. While you sleep, your brain works

C. How to get rid of the waste in the brain

D. The brain works differently during day and night
