8A DIY

Integrated skills- DIY to make a colorful life

Teaching objectives

1. To enable Ss to catch some useful information from listening and viewing;

2. To learn to talk about DIY in English;

3. To encourage Ss to do DIY -food and second-hand waste in daily life.

 

Teaching Material

Computer, PPT, printed material, recorded recording,downloaded videos

 

Teaching procedure

Step 1 Lead-in

A. Teacher presents the learning aims for students in today’s lesson;

B. Students brainstorm the ways to cook food;

C. Students work in groups and compare the methods that are most common at their homes with their partners.

 

Step 2 A recipe-Lomi Lomi Salmon

Read this recipe for a popular Hawaiian dish. Notice how the information is divided into a list of ingredients and how to make the dish.

After reading, the students should find the three parts: Ingredients, amount/shapes as well as the steps to make the food.

 

Step 3  Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwich

Task 1   Speak out what we need for the food.

Task 2   Listen to the this recipe. Number the pictures from 1 to 5.

Task 3   Listen again to get the methods of making the food.

Task 4   Useful expressions about sequence adverbs

 

Step 4 barbecued kebabs

Here is the recipe for barbecued kebabs. Look at the pictures and number the steps from 1 to 5. Then add a sequence adverb to each step.

 

£............... put the meat and vegetables on the skewers.

£............... put charcoal in the barbecues and light it.

£............... take the kebabs off the barbecue and enjoy!

£............... put the kebabs on the barbecue and cook for 10 to 15 minutes, turning them over from time to time.

£............... cut up some meat and vegetable. Marinate them for 20 minutes in your favourite barbecue sauce.

 

Task Pair work

Cover the recipe and look only at the pictures. Explain each step of the recipe to your partner.

Step 5 Practice  

Of the two videos, you should choose one of them you like and talk about 1) what do you need to make the food; 2) how to make.  

This is a group work. After your group finish discussing, you’d better recommend a member to share with us.

Step 6 Tips for making DIY

Students are encouraged to speak out as much as possible.

A. To think about more DIY jobs

B. To lead in how we can deal with the waste we produce: 1) to recycle 2) to create something new (present some bottles/boxes/flowers ... )

   Express a feeling that nothing is a waste if we have a creative mind.

 

Step 8 Summary

Students are required to repeat the key points of today’s class, which includes four main branches in DIY food.

 

Step 9 Homework

Try to do some DIY at home this weekend.

If you make DIY food, you should follow the four main parts and can take some photos. If you have other ideas, you can take your DIY work back to school , and you are encouraged to show it to your classmates. And everybody can exchange your ideas with each other.   



本节课的内容是DIY Food,选于教材Integrated skills的内容,但是在教材基础上进行了扩展和延伸,重新寻找了相关关于视频制作的资源,包括自己录音并且自制音频文件,找相关食物制作的段视屏(英文字幕版本)。给到学生的内容里,新词比较多,所以提前讲解了单词。但对于基础比较薄弱的学生来说,生词这块还是造成了一些困阻
