Unit6 it’s raining!

Part One Analysis of the Teaching Material

1. Status and Function

This is an important lesson in this unit. In this lesson, the students learn how to describe the weather and what you are doing. Such a topic is related to their daily life. So it can raise their learning interests and improve their spoken English.

2. The Structure of the Teaching Material

In the first part, students will be asked to watch a video which is about what the man is doing to attract their attention. And it will help the students review the important sentences in the last unit.

All the pictures in the second part are showed to teach the students new words and sentences.

In the third part, students are provided with listening and speaking using the target language “How’s the weather” and “what are you doing”.

In the fourth part, students are asked to talk free according to a map. This is a consolidation practice using the target language. It’s helpful for students to better understand what they have learned in this lesson and to improve their speaking skills.

Target language: How’s the weather?   It’s raining.

              How’s it going?       It’s great.

To develop the students’ abilities of listening, speaking, reading and writing

To develop the students’ abilities of communication by learning the useful structures

Part Two Analysis of the students

Most of the students are very interested in this topic. But they don’t have enough vocabulary to talk about it.

Most of the students are afraid of speaking English in class.

The gap of the students’ knowledge level in the same class is quite wide.

Step I Warming-up: an English video (2 minutes)

I’m driving in the car. I’m sailing on the ship.

I’m traveling on a train. I’m riding on a horse.

Over the mountains, through the trees,

Travel the world and the seven seas.

(This activity helps the students to be interested in English learning. And it can also help the students to review the Present Continuous Tense.)

StepReview: (3 minutes)

·Review the important sentences we learned last unit.

·Show some pictures to the students. Then let the students work in pairs to talk about the pictures by using the sentences: “what’s he/she doing?” “What’re they doing?”

Step Presentation

1. Lead-in: (2 minutes)

Play a video about weather forecast and lead in the new lesson.

Then teach a new word (weather) and the target language How’s the weather? / What’s the weather like? .

2. Teach New Words (3 minutes)

Teach the students new words by using some pictures.

3. Listening (section A1a& 1b) (6 minutes)

1a match the words with the pictures [a-e].

Check the answers: 1. a  2.e  3.d  4. b  5. c  

1b put the city names into the boxes above.

We’ll hear four different conversations. Each one is about the weather in a different city. Play the tape for only one time. Students listen and do the exercises.

1c Pair Work

·Point out the example conversation. Ask two students to read the dialogue to the class.

·Then let students work with a partner and make their own conversations.

·The teacher checks some pairs.

4. Pratice (section A2a& 2b) (6 minutes)

2a Listen and number the picture [1-4] as you hear them.

Check the answers: 2 3 4 1

2b Listen again. Match the names with the activities.

Check the answers: 1.c 2.a 3.d 4.b

2c Pair Work

· Call attention to the four people in the pictures in activity 2a.

· Point out the sample conversation and make the students talk about the people above.

Step Consolidation

1.         Fill In the Blanks (2 minutes)

There is a short passage without some words because of Xiaoming’s careless. Let the students fill in the blanks.

(This activity is to improve the students’ reading and writing skills.)

2.         Challenge the Reporter (10 minutes)

Look at a map. Talk about what you can see in the map by using the target language.

(This activity is to make the students consolidate the target language and improve the students’ reading and speaking skills.)

Step Ⅵ  Grammar Focus (3 minurtes)

How’s the weather?     It’s raining.

What are you doing?    I’m watching TV.

What are they doing?   They’re studyin

What’s he doing?      He’s playing basketball.

What’s she doing?     She is cooking.

How’s it going?       Great!

(Point out the set phrase How’s it going? Tell students that this is a very common English phrase to ask how someone is or how they have been recently. It used very similarly to Zuijin Zenmeyang? or Zuijin haoma?

Read these sentences for several times.)

Step Ⅶ  Homework (2 minutes)

1. Review what we have learned today.

2. Watch the weather forecast in CCTV and write the weather in at least five cities. For example:Guangzhou—sunny

3. Summarize the differences among these words.

Sun-sunny, cloud-cloudy, wind-windy, rain-rainy, snow-snowy

4. Recite the sentences in Grammar Focus.

Step Ⅷ Ending: Listen to a Song (1 minutes)

Play a song how’s the weather?

(This activity is to make the students consolidate the new words and sentences we leaned today and relax themselves.)
