Unit5 Reading First Aid for Burns

潮州市瓷都中学参加市优质公开课比赛高二级英语科备课组(教案)

Teaching aims:
   1. Knowledge aims: Enable the students to master the new words and phrases.

2. Ability aims: Enable the students to master some knowledge of first aid treatment for burns.

3. Emotion aims: Enable the students to learn how to perform first aid for burns.

Teaching important points:
   1. Enable the students to master the usage of the following phrases:

squeeze out,  in place,  over and over again

2. Improve the students’ reading ability.

3. Enable the students to master some knowledge of first aid.
Teaching difficult points:
     Enable the students to master some knowledge of first aid treatment for burns.

Teaching methods:
     Skimming and discussion.

Teaching aids:  The multi-media and a blackboard.

Teaching procedures:
Step1. Revision

   Go over what they have learnt about first aid.

Step2. Pre-reading
Show the Ss a picture and ask them the following questions:
Q1: What has happened to the child?

Q2: What kinds of first aid would you perform?

Step3. Skimming

Let the Ss skim the title & subtitles and then find out the answers to the questions:
Q1: What topics are covered in the passage?

Q2: How many types of burns are there in the passage and what are they?

Step4. Careful reading

Part1. The purpose of skin
Ask the Ss to read paragraph one together and answer the question:

What can skin do for our body ?

Part2. Causes of burns

Ask the Ss to find out the causes of burns in paragraph two and match the causes with the pictures given.

Part3&4. Types and characteristics of burns:

1.      Ask the Ss to have a discussion with their partners and fill in the chart.

2. Match the types of burns with the pictures.

Part5 First aid treatment

1. Ask the Ss to listen to the tape and do some true or false statements.

1) Take clothing off the burned area unless it is stuck to the burn.

2) Cool burns at once with cool and icy water.

3) For second degree burns, keep wet cloths on the burned area for about an hour until pain is not so bad.

4) Rub the burned area after getting burnt.

5) Tape is needed to keep the bandage in place.

6) It’s better that you put butter or oil on burns.

What first aid will you give in the following situations?
