There’re some key words about a person on the screen. I’ll use attributive clauses to make some sentences. After my descriptions, please tell me the name of him or her. Can you?

Ss: Yes.

Q: Can you guess? Who is he or she?

Ss: Yes, he is David Beckham.

T: Very good. Now it’s your turn now. On the paper I gave you, there are also some key words or phrases about a certain person. The sentences you make should also use attributive clauses. Two minutes to prepare. Two minutes later, I’ll invite some of you to describe your person. Are you clear?

Ss: Yes.

Ss: Yes. They are all male, black.

T: Right. They are all black. And what kind of life can you guess they have now?

Ss: Happy, rich …

T: How about many years ago?

Ss: Maybe bad, poor, miserable…

T: Yes, so there was a long way for the blacks to fight for their right and many heroes appeared during that time. Next person, he was considered as a national hero, and try to guess who he is according to my information.

1. helped the black people

2. ANC (African National Congress) Youth League

3. in prison

4. the first black President of South Africa.

Ss: Nelson Mandela

T: Right, you are clever. He did a lot of things for the blacks. Do you want to know more about him? Today we will learn a story about his life.

Step 2 Listening

Step 3 Fast Reading

T: Now open your books, turn to Page 34. Look at the title, Elias’ Story.

Before we read the text, can you guess “What’s the relationship between them?” according to the title.

Keep the answer to yourself and then read the text quickly to check whether your answer is right or wrong. And here I have two more questions for you. Try to find the answers to them when you are reading.

 (After skimming )

T: What’s the relationship between them?

Ss: They are friends.

T: Yes, quite good. They are friends. And just now we skimmed the passage, have you got the general idea of this story?

(Give the Ss a multiple choice)

The story is about “How Mandela helped black people.”

(Ask some students to check the answers and explain)

Step 4 Careful Reading

T: As we’ve known what the story mainly tells us, how do you think Elias organized his story? In order of time or in order of place?

Ss: In order of time. (设计说明:由此引出Elias在各个时期的活动。)

T: When we read a passage about a person’s life, we should pay attention to the year and the event. So try to make a table of Elias’ life.

(Give some minutes, and after finishing the paper, let Ss state their opinions)

T: From the timeline of Elias’, what kind of life did Elias live?

Ss: A hard life.

T: Yes, indeed.

Q1: And what difficulties did black people like Elias have in South Africa?

And Mandela did help Elias a lot. Why was he willing to help him?

Ss: Because they were black.

T: Are you willing to live in a place like this?

Ss: No.

T: Of course not. So if we want to have our own right, what will we do?

Ss: …

T: Q2: What did Mandela do to help Elias and other black people?

I will give you some verbs. Please add the detailed information.

  (offered; organized; broke; blew up)

(Giving some minutes, and let Ss fill in the blanks)

Step 5 Group Work

T: Well, now 21st Century intends to send a journalist to interview Nelson Mandela. Would you like to be the lucky one? Let’s have a competition. Those who want to become the journalist should ask Nelson Mandela some proper questions and make him interested in your topic. And of course the interviewee (Nelson Mandela) should be cooperative and give the proper answer. In your interview keep it in mind that you should make use of as many words and phrases as you can. And use at least one attributive clause. The following information may help you.

(Give 5 minutes to prepare the interview)

(After 5 minutes…)

T: Ok. Are you ready?

Ss: Yes.

T: Great! I’ll invite two groups to come onto the stage to present your interview. Meanwhile, others will be judges. You should listen carefully and prepare to give a mark. See what the reporter uses in his or her interview and how many attributive clauses are used and then give your final score.

Step 6 Homework

1.  Please write a report of the interview you just made for your newspaper. Use attributive clauses and the phrases we learnt in this lesson as many as possible.

2.  Surf the Internet and try to find more information about Nelson Mandela and Beijing Summit.
