I Teaching Material Analysis

Shawshank Redemption is a film that has great impact on billions. Despite its simple plot, the content itself is one of the best to illustrate what hope can bring. To dub this film is to be a good chance of experiencing the hero’s anecdotes and of feeling Andy’s emotions. 

While listening, students are supposed to focus on the intonation and pronunciation of Andy, including but not limited to his speed and stress, which are a revelation of the hero’s emotions. These are also the things that give language its vitality. 

 

II Teaching Focus

1. Develop students’ listening sensitivity to intonation and pronunciation;

2. Encourage and provide students with enough chances to practice dubbing each line with emotions.

 

III Teaching Difficulties

1. Let students catch the subtle feelings hidden within intonation and pronunciation;

2. Correct speaker’s improper pronunciation and intonation problems.

 

IV Three-Dimensional Teaching Purposes

1. Knowledge-Based Teaching Purposes:

(1) Enable students to learn the historical background of Shawshank Redemption;

(2) Equip students with social customs between people in the US.

2. Ability-Based Teaching Purposes:

(1) Train students’ listening ability, especially self-introductory monologues;

(2) Develop students’ speaking ability, especially dubbing ability

3. Emotion-Based Teaching Purposes:

(1) Stimulate students’ love for their own life through watching the persevering Andy’s struggle against hardships;

(2) Train students’ cooperation

 

V Teaching Procedures

Step 1 About the film 

The Shawshank Redemption is a 1994 American drama film written and directed by Frank Darabont and starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman.

Adapted from the Stephen King novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, the film tells the story of Andy Dufresne, a banker who spends nearly two decades in Shawshank State Prison for the murder of his wife and her lover despite his claims of innocence. During his time at the prison, he befriends a fellow inmate, Ellis Boyd "Red" Redding, and finds himself protected by the guards after the warden begins using him in his money laundering operation.

Despite a lukewarm box office reception that did not recoup its budget, the film received favorable reviews from critics, multiple award nominations, and has since enjoyed a remarkable life on cable television, VHS, DVD, and Blu-ray. It was included in the American Film Institute's 100 Years 100 Movies 10th Anniversary Edition.

The Shawshank Redemption is an allegory for maintaining one's feeling of self-worth when placed in a hopeless position. The integrity of Andy Dufresne is an important theme in the story line, especially in prison, where integrity is lacking.

 

Step 2 First-time watching of the clip

1. Ask students to count the number of characters in the clip and their names;

2. Let them grasp the main idea of the clip.

 

Step 3 Second-time watching of the clip

1. Direct students’ attention to the intonation and pronunciation of Andy and Red; 

2. Notice the different way Andy and Red speak, compared with how others do.

 

Step 4 Line by line listening and dubbing

1. Read through the clip script:

[APPROVAL]

-Please sit down.

-Ellis Boyd Redding...your files say you've served 40 years of a life sentence.

-You feel you've been rehabilitated?

-Rehabilitated? Well, now, let me see. I don't have any idea what that means.

-It means you're ready to rejoin society...

-I know what you think it means, sonny. To me it's just a made-up word. A politician's word so that...young fellas like yourself can wear a suit and a tie...and have a job.

-What do you really want to know? Am I sorry for what I did?

-Well, are you?

-There's not a day goes by I don't feel regret. Not because I'm in here or because you think I should. I look back on the way I was then...a young... ...stupid kid who committed that terrible crime. I want to talk to him. I want to try and talk some sense to him. Tell him the way things are. But I can’t. That kid's long gone......and this old man is all that's left. I got to live with that. Rehabilitated? It's just a bullshit word.

-So you go on and stamp your forms, sonny, and stop wasting my time. Because to tell you the truth...I don't give a shit.

Clip B

[SONG]

-Do you hear that? Dufresne!

-Andy, let me out!

-I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singing about. Truth is, I don't want to know. Some things are best left unsaid. I like to think it was something so beautiful...it can't be expressed in words...and makes your heart ache because of it. I tell you, those voices soared...higher and farther than anybody in a gray place dares to dream. It was like a beautiful bird flapped into our drab cage...and made those walls dissolve away. And for the briefest of moments...every last man at Shawshank felt free. It pissed the warden off something awful. 

-Open the door. Open it up! Dufresne, open this door! Turn that off! I am warning you. Turn that off!

-You're mine now.

-Andy got two weeks in the hole for that little stunt.

-On your feet.

2. Sort out the new vocabulary: 

life sentence终身监禁; rehabilitate改造; commit犯(罪); flap拍打; drab单调的; warden监狱长

3. Let students read it by themselves with fluency.

4. Play the first line three times, ask a volunteer to dub, correct his/her pronunciation and intonation if necessary and give praise.

5. Play the second line three times, ask a volunteer to dub, correct his/her pronunciation and intonation if necessary and give praise. (Till the last line)

6. Always remind them of where to pause, stress and stop and the meaning of doing these. 

 

Step 5 Homework

1. Hand out the material for the next class;

2. Assign students with preview homework, preferably watching the film in advance.
