Lesson 2Unit 13

 Personalities and Jobs

Teaching Aims:

1.     To practice listening in order to get information and answer questions.

2.     To practice describing people, personalities and jobs orally.

3.     To acquire knowledge about personalities and jobs and know better about themselves.

Teaching difficulties:

1.     To practice listening in order to answer questions.

2.     To speak about personalities and jobs.

Teaching Aids: computer, projection, and cards

Teaching procedures:

Ⅰ. Warming up

T: Today we’ll learn something about personalities and jobs. What job do you want to do?

S: ….

T: Why do you want to be a …?

S: ….

T: Do you think there is necessary connection between “personalities and jobs”?...Yes, everyone has disadvantages and advantages in personalities; for example, someone is brave but impatient and careless, so they are not fit for…

S: Doctors, nurse or teachers.

T: Do you know your own personalities?

S: …

T: Well, let’s do an interesting test to see what personalities you may have. (Show some pictures by projection.) Please watch the nine pictures and choose the one you like best in 5 seconds.

T:  These pictures stand for different personalities. Now read your own result or analysis quickly.

(Show the analysis and ask the students to read it silently and quickly. If they have difficulty understanding some words, they can discuss them with their partners.)

The analysis:

1. People who choose Picture 1 may be light-hearted (无忧无虑的), open-minded and curious. They are cheerful persons and can be good photographers, administrators, sports players or advertisers.

2. People who choose Picture 2 may be independent, strong-minded and artistic (有艺术气质的). They are individualistic (个人主义的)persons. They can do well in many fields of work such as computer, architecture , fashion or art.

3. People who choose Picture 3 may be sensitive (敏感的) forgiving and introspective (自省的). They are good thinkers, engineers, teachers or writers.

4. People who choose Picture 4 may be steady-going(稳重的), practical and reliable. They have openheartedness (亲和力) so they can be good doctors, politicians, sellers or actors/ actresses.

5. People who choose Picture 5 may be fair, strong-willed and confident. They are professional in their field such as police, law, medicine and army.

6. People who choose Picture 6 may be gentle, cautious and easy-going (随和的). They are people to be satisfied easily. They can be good teachers, cooks, farmers or nurses.

7. People who choose Picture 7 may be elegant, confident and analytical (分析能力强的). They usually are well-educated and successful politicians, statisticians (统计学家), scientists or lawyers.

8. People who choose Picture 8 may be romantic, sentimental(情绪化的) and perceptual(感性的). Their life is full of dreams and they do well in writing, art, fashion or entertainment (娱乐业).

9. People who choose Picture 9 may be outgoing and energetic. They enjoy diversified(多元化的) jobs, such as journalists, sportsman or adventurers.

II.  Inputs of words

1. T:  Our society needs all kinds of people doing different jobs. All people’s jobs are important. Without farmers working we will have no grain, meat, vegetables and fruits. Look at the photographs and guess what kind of job they do and what personalities they need to have.

(Give some pictures. Students have given many words including some unexpected answers. The teacher can add some words, such as: confident, creative, sociable, sympathetic, persistent, patient, selfish, intelligent, independent, communicative and so on.

It’s quite easy for students to guess the jobs but the main purpose is to ask students to say out and get familiar with the names of jobs and personalities they have learned.)

2.     The teacher shows more new words and makes sure they understand the meanings of them and are able to pronounce them correctly after the teacher.

3.     Students do the words exercise---Ex. 1 individually.

Ⅲ Listening

1. Pre-listening

The teacher asks students to read the questions in Ex.2 and Ex. 3. Then the teacher encourages students to predict what kind of things they might hear.

Ex. 3 Listen to 3 dialogues and answer questions. The dialogues will be played twice.

Ex. 4 Listen to the rest 3 dialogues and fill in the blanks in the form. The dialogues will be played twice.

2. While-listening

1.     The teacher plays the mp3 for students to do Ex.2, Ex. 3 and Ex. 4.

2.     Check the answers by having students read out their answers.

IV  Speaking-----Make them say it

T: Now you are divided into 8 groups, each group is given 2 cards with words which are jobs and the cards should be hidden from other groups. Describe the qualities and skills for the job, and other groups guess which job they are referring to. The group guesses one right gain one score and the group describing it correctly and clearly gains one score, too.

(The teacher does an example of “teachers” for the students at first. Praise students for their wonderful words, phrases and sentence structures they use and at the same time point out their mistakes if time permits.)

V Homework

Write sentences about your best friend and say what job would be suitable for him / her. Give reasons.
