1)        Let students learn about the history of theAmberRoom.

2)        Practice reading skills: skimming and scanning.

1)        Enable students to learn to talk about cultural relics.

 

Attitude and emotion:

1)        Stimulate students’ sense of cultural relics’ protection by reading the passage In Search of the Amber Room.

2)        Develop students’ sense of cooperative learning.

 

2. Emphasis and difficulty:

1.      Get students be familiar with the names of different persons that appeared in the passage.

2.      Let students read the passage In Search of the Amber Room and learn about the history of theAmberRoom.

3.      Develop students’ reading skill.

1)  Pre-reading

Knowledge of amber:

Where is amber from?  --- Amber comes from the needle forest.

What colour is it? --- It has a beautiful yellow-brown colour.

How does it feel? --- It feels as hard as stone.

What else do you know about it?

--- When heated, it easily melts. Once it is heated, it can be made into any shape.

In this journey, we will find out something about…

TheAmberRoom the best and biggest work of amber art ever made.

 

2) While-reading

Step 1: Finding out the route

1) Where did theAmberRoom?

Prussia–St Petersburg– Königsberg

2) Listen to the tape twice and try to get some information about theAmberRoom.

 

Step 2: Discussion

1) What have they got to do with theAmberRoom?

Frederick William Ⅰ

2) Read the passage and try to fill in the blanks.

3) Check the answers.

The outline of the story:

Frederick I: passed theAmberRoomdown

Frederick William I: gave it to Peter the Great as a gift of friendship (in 1716)

Peter the Great: sent him a troop of his best soldiers in return (in 1716)

             The room served as:

a) his winter palace inSt Petersburg.

             b) a small reception hall for important visitors.

Catherine II: more details were added to it (in 1770)

Russia(the Russians) [at war, 1941] Nazi Germany(the Nazis)

The Nazis arrived:

Russia (the Russians): were only able to remove furniture and small art objects.

The Nazis: stole theAmberRoomand sent it to Königsberg.

After that, what happened to theAmberRoomwas a mystery.

 

Step 3: Retelling the history of theAmberRoom

Suppose you are a tour guide, you are going to introduce the history of theAmberRoomto visitors. Try to tell it according to the words given.
